During the early part of the 16th century, Piagapo has territorial land and ruled by “Dayang Labi” whose titular name was “Bai sa Radapan” and whose direct descendants were the illustrations clans of Amirong Insar Orayo, Sultan Bago, Padingan and Radia Simba-an of Ramain. The four sultans of Barangay Basak, Sultan Darimbang of Barangay Pantar, Sultan sa Radapan of Barangay Radapan and Sultan Maamur of Barangay Tambo make up the ( 4) Royal houses of Piagapo.
Accordingly, Piagapo got its name from the muslim term”Apo” whih literally means decendent. Dayang Labi was a direct descenedant of Sharif Kabunsuan, the First Muslim Missionary who landed in Maguidanao to spread ISLAM.
Before its creation as a Municipality, Piagapo was a part of the Municipality of Saguiaran but the people supplicated for the creation of Piagapo as a separate municipality, by the year 1961 Piagapo was created by virtue of executive order no. 261 dated June 9, 1961 then President of the Republic of the Philippines, Carlos P. Garcia.
I. LOCATION
The Municipality of Piagapo is one of the 39 municipalities of the Province of Lanao Del Sur located in the western part of the province with bigger agricultural land areas. It is bounded on the North, by the Municipality of Pantao ragat and Baloi both of Lanao del Norte, on the south bounded by the Municipality of Bacolod – kalawi, Tugaya, Balindong and Marantao, all of Lanao del Sur, on the West bounded by the Municiapality of Madalum lanao del Sur and Munai of Lanao del Norte on the east bounded by the Municipality of Saguiaran. It is approximately 10kms. Away from Marawi City. It has three(3) territorial division Sundigan a Piagapo, Patapanoroganan( four Royal houses) and Bubonga Maranatao comprising the 37 Barangays of the Municipality.
The consecutive chief executive of this Municipality to wit:
1st Mayor, Datu Dimapunung Limbo as OIC for the period of 3 months.
2nd Mayor, Hadji Masio Orangot, from 1961 to 1978.
3rd Mayor, Maungangun Macalimbon as Military take over from 1978 to 1979.
4rth mayor, Col. Guimba-anun Mandangan as OIC for 6 months from 1979 to 1980.
5th Mayor, Datu Basher Amairomag from 1980 to 1981
6th Mayor, Sultan Diabber S. Amairomag, From 1981 to 1986.
7th Mayor, Datu Mitoon Ampang from April 16, 1986 to 1987.
8th Mayor, Manso Panganting from April 1987 to December 1987.
9th Mayor, Sultan Pindaton Hadji Omar as Care- take from December 1987 to February 1988.
10th Mayor, Sultan Mauyag D.L. Acoon from 1988 to 1998.
11th Mayor, Sultan Maconadara G.L Compa from 1998 to 2001.
12th Mayor, Amrousi A. Macatanong from 2001- 2001/ 200-2007/2007-2010.
II. PHYSICAL FEATURES
The municipality of Piagapo has total area of 26, 009 hectares representing 3% of the total land area of the Province of Lanao del Sur it has wide agricultural land suited to all kinds of crops like corn, ice, and vegetables it also noted for its vast forest areas extending from its southern to western parts, terrains are characterized as hilly with mountain peaks and ranges like mount Gorain, Mount Bansalan and Mount Bialbalan, there are valleys and rivers too like the Radapan river, streaming down to the Municipaity of Poona- Piagapo and Municipality of Linamon both of Lanao del Norte similarly the Pamacutan and Pansor river bound to Agus River of Barangay Ulago, at Balo-I, Lanao del Norte.
III. CLIMATE AND POWER SUPPLY
Generally, a cool and pleasant climate prevails in the Municipality acceptable to people residing in the area. With regards to power supply. LASURECO provides electricity to different Barangays of the Municipality.
IV. HEALTH AND SANITATION
At present, this Municipality has only one Health Center Operational that is in Barangay Ilian, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur, Manned by few health personnel like one(1) rural physician, one(1) rural nurse, four(40 health midwives.
Health is a problem due to lack of medicines and few officials to handle one Municipality is very hard for them to accommodate all the residents.
V. EDUCATION
This Municipality has fourteen(14) primary schools and six(6) elementary schools and four(4)national high schools. Majority of the residents are low income families, many of then cannot afford to send their children to Marawi City after Graduating in elementary, as a result some boys became a problem of the community and some girls went on early marriage. To date, the establishment of this national high school gives a brighter future to the residents of this Municipality.
This time after their elementary education the resident of the eastern part of the Municipality can easily reach Bubonga –Marantao National High School or the Macatanong memorial National High School for their secondary education while resident in the western part of the Municipality can choose either to Acoon Memorial National High School or to Piagapo National School where success awaits for them because Mindanao State University in Marawi City is a walking distance from the Municipality. They can acquire any degree they wish with less expense because Mindanao State University is a school of poor but deserving and able students,
